SCULPTING THE HUMAN FIGURE |
| Students will study techniques, artistic approaches used for accurately, and expressively modeling the human figure in oil clay. The instructor will help participants discover the anatomical structure of the human body and head in a practical manner useful to artists. Students will learn how to use drawing as a preparation for studying sculptural concepts and recording the human figure. Participants will also develop methods for taking visual measurements of proportions and how to build and use scale templates for reducing or enlarging relative proportions. Students will be introduced to the idea of composition and aesthetics in sculptural works. Through practice, students will learn how to build a metal armature, add clay to create form, achieve textural finish and capture a likeness using the life model. Mold making and other sculptural processes to make the students work permanent will also be discussed. |
| Methods of Instruction: |
| Lecture/discussions, hand-on studio experience, visual aids, models, demonstrations, and critiques. |
| Sculpting a Low relief portrait. Course Description/Objectives |
| Student will study basic principles and techniques of modeling low relief in clay. Students will learn how to use drawing as a preparation for studying sculptural concepts of the human head in low relief and composition; methods of recording the human forms, principles of perspective curves of a head. Participants will also develop methods for taking visual measurements of proportion. Students will be introduced to idea of composition and aesthetics in sculptural low relief portrait. The instructor will help participants discover the anatomical structure of the human head in a practical manner useful to artists, and how to render them in a convincing three-dimensional manner. Through practice, students will learn how to build an armature for low relief, add clay to create forms, achieve textural finish and capture a likeness using the life model and photos. Mold making and other related processes to convert a clay model to permanent materials will be also discussed. |

| Mold-making Workshop |
| Four days, hands-on workshop includes presentations of technology, philosophy actual mold production. The mold being created can be actual student's sculptural portraits, done during Frye Art Museum workshops. |
| Workshop Itinerary: A.) Mold Seam Lines-positioning of seam lines, an integral step B.) Separating Wall- methods and techniques C.) Face Coat-materials and methods D.) Flexible Mold- w/reinforcements materials and techniques E.) Mother Mold-materials and methods F.) Opening the Mold G.) Plaster Casting -building and installation of reinforcements H.) Finishing plaster casting. |
| Waste Mold-making Workshop |
|
Three days hand-on workshop includes presentation of technology and actual mold production. The mold being created will be an actual mold of portrait, done by student. First day. Students will design separating wall, put face layer of colored plaster, put main body of plaster mold with keys. Second day. Students will open the plaster mold, dig out the clay, clean mold, apply mold release and close and secure the mold. Third day. Students will chip out the plaster mold to free the casting. They will cleane the plaster copies and fix surface if necessary. |
| BASIC DRAWING |
| Course Description/Objectives: Students will study fundamental drawing techniques and methods while learning the basics of lines, shadings, shapes and texture starting from drawing the simple forms up to the human heads with life models. The instructor will help participants discover the structure of the objects, anatomical structure and proportions of the human head and facial features. Participants will also develop methods for taking visual measurements of proportions. Students will be introduced to the idea of composition and aesthetics in drawing. The principle of perspective, the rules of perspective and their application will be presented in simple form. The studies are designed to be repeated that through practice can drawing concepts become meaningful and useful. |
